How to Clean Tile Grout and Make Your Floors Look Like New

Tile floors are known for their durability and timeless appearance, but the grout lines between the tiles often become stained long before the tiles themselves show signs of wear. Because grout is naturally porous, it easily absorbs dirt, grease, soap residue, and moisture, causing once-bright grout lines to gradually darken.

Kitchen floors often collect cooking oils and food residue, while bathroom grout may develop mildew due to constant moisture. Entryways can also accumulate mud, dust, and debris tracked in from outdoors. Even regular mopping isn’t always enough to remove deeply embedded grime.

The good news is that stained grout doesn’t necessarily need to be replaced. With the right cleaning method and a little patience, you can often restore much of its original appearance using common household products.

Supplies You’ll Need

• Warm water
• Baking soda
• White vinegar*
• Mild dish soap
• Hydrogen peroxide (for stubborn stains)
• Small stiff nylon brush or an old toothbrush
• Microfiber cloths
• Bucket
• Spray bottle
• Rubber gloves

*Do not use vinegar on natural stone surfaces such as marble, limestone, travertine, or slate, as acidic cleaners may damage these materials.

Before tackling stubborn stains, preparing the floor correctly makes a big difference. Removing loose dirt first allows your cleaning solution to work directly on the grout instead of pushing debris around.
